Sexual Misconduct Awareness and Response Training
Three graduate student organizations (Women in Science, Women in Marine Sciences, and Women in Policy) came together in February 2018 to organize 3 trainings (each 4 hours, 25 attendees per event max) for sexual harassment and misconduct for graduate students and faculty at OSU led by Willamette Public Health (now TMI Action) founder, Aili Johnston. Aili’s education and experience inspired her to create SMART®, Sexual Misconduct Awareness and Response Training. She first implemented this training in 2013 for the U.S. Forest Service in the Willamette National Forest in Oregon. In the years that followed, her training program expanded and grew into the organization known today as Willamette Public Health, located in Corvallis, Oregon. Aili has been contracted by the U.S. Forest Service, Region 6 (Oregon and Washington) since 2014.
Our training events were designed to help recognize, identify, and address sexual misconduct in graduate research settings. Through awareness, education, and prevention strategies, this training provided a way to help mitigate the problem before it escalates. The main goal is for graduate students and faculty to learn how to make informed choices about public health issues and to learn how to support those who have been through a traumatic event.
